Apollo World Rankings
What Are the Apollo World Rankings?
Apollo World Rankings are based on how athletes place in all Apollo-qualifying individual competitions over the past two years. The better you place — and the tougher the field — the more points you earn. Each athlete’s total points are turned into a score from 0 to 99, with the top-rated athlete being awarded a 99. (This is reflective of the Madden rating system where the highest rating an athlete can earn is 99.)
How Points Are Earned?
Points are given based on your finish at each competition. First place gets the most points, second a little less, and so on. The total amount of points available depends on who’s competing. If you're up against high-level athletes, there are more points on the table.
Which Competitions Count?
The Apollo Database includes all CrossFit season competitions (the Open, Quarterfinals, Semifinals/Sanctionals/Regionals, and the Games), and all off-season competitions with at least 10 athletes and 2 athletes rated 75 or higher. Smaller or lower-level competitions don’t qualify for the Apollo Database.
FAQ's
2. How does the 2-year lookback work?
The rankings system incorporates results from stages in the past two years for a maximum of ten season stages.
3. How is strength of field determined?
The strength of field of any competition is mathematically determined based on the strength of the athletes leading into the competition.
4. Do the rankings include the entire Open and Quarterfinals leaderboard?
No, the rankings include only the top 2,000 athletes from the Open and Quarterfinals leaderboards. This ensures that the rankings include the top 1% of athletes who regularly compete in qualifying off-season competitions, while maintaining the integrity of the rankings by not including athletes who are already appropriately ranked by their Open or Quarterfinals place.
5. What if an athlete withdraws from a competition?
If an athlete participates in at least one event at a competition, they will still contribute to the strength of the field for that competition and earn points based on their final placing, regardless of whether they complete the entire competition.
6. What if an athlete does not compete in a given stage of the season for any reason?
Athletes who do not compete in a particular stage will not receive any points for that stage. The Apollo rankings are designed to objectively represent the current field of CrossFit athletes based on performance.
7. What is subjective about this ranking system?
There are two subjective elements in the system:
1. An initial strength of field was required to allow athletes to start earning points. For this, a ten-year lookback was used to assign the strength of field for the oldest competition in that time period. From this starting point, the system operates independently and is self-sustaining.
2. Athletes who participate in multiple competitions within a given stage receive 10% of their points at each successive competition, based on the relative strength of their finish: 100% of their strongest finish, 10% of their 2nd strongest finish, 1% of their 3rd strongest finish, etc.
